Merced police have announced the arrest of a man who allegedly fought with officers after being caught with a stolen vehicle.

On the afternoon of May 20, officers responded to the Rite Aid parking lot near G Street and Olive Avenue, where 47-year-old Cory Gummo had reportedly been spotted with a stolen car.

When an officer approached Gummo and told him he was under arrest, Gummo allegedly began fighting with the officer to such a degree that Gummo had to be apprehended with the help of a K-9 officer. The officer sustained injuries during the altercation, police said.

After being medically cleared, Gummo was booked on suspicion of possession of a stolen vehicle, resisting or obstructing a peace officer, assault on a peace officer, and violation of probation.
