Ontario police fatally shoot driver of stolen vehicle in Riverside County

A pursuit between Ontario police and a stolen vehicle ended after the driver was fatally shot by officers.

The pursuit began shortly after 6 PM on April 4th, when police spotted the stolen vehicle and tried to conduct a traffic stop near Haven Avenue and Francis Street in Ontario.  The driver, whose identity has not been released, refused to pull over and instead led officers on a pursuit toward Riverside County.

“During the pursuit the suspect used the vehicle to ram Ontario Police vehicles,” according to the Ontario Police Department press release.  “At that time, an officer involved shooting occurred in which Ontario Police Officers fired their weapons, striking the driver.”

The chase concluded at Bain Street and Limonite Avenue in Riverside County.  Despite officers’ attempts to resuscitate the man, he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the officer involved shooting.

“The driver’s identity is being withheld until the Riverside County Coroner completes notifications,” says the release.
