Former KTVU News Anchor Crashes before his Arrest on Suspicion of DUI

OAKLAND — A former TV news anchor is making his own news for getting in trouble with the law and at his job. Frank W. Sommerville, 63 of Oakland, was arrested on suspicion of a DUI involving a vehicle crash.

Sommerville was arrested by Oakland PD on December 31, several hours after a two-vehicle accident. He was booked at Santa Rita Jail, cited for a DUI and later released from custody, pending a court hearing.

Until recently, Sommerville was a news anchor at KTVU Fox 2, which broadcasts from Oakland. Sommerville appeared intoxicated on-air in May, with slurred speech and he apparently had difficulty reading from a teleprompter. He was later suspended from his job, following a dispute with management concerning news coverage.

On December 30, Sommerville was involved in a vehicular accident close to Lake Merritt in downtown Oakland. The accident occurred shortly before 8 p.m., near the intersection of Broadway and West Grand Avenue.

A vehicle was rear-ended by another vehicle, which was recorded on video. The driver whose car was hit exited from the vehicle. However, the other driver apparently started driving again, which pushed the rear-ended vehicle into a utility pole.

Police investigating the collision, determined that Sommerville appeared intoxicated at the time. He was transported by ambulance to a hospital for medical evaluation and for a blood- alcohol test.
