Modesto Police: Suspect in donut shop robbery arrested, linked to two other recent robberies

Modesto police have arrested a suspect in connection to a recent robbery and shooting at a local donut shop.

In the early morning hours of Tuesday, October 12, a man — later identified as 35-year-old David Smith of Modesto — allegedly robbed We Donuts on Scenic Drive at gunpoint, during which he is accused of firing at least one shot at the clerk. She was treated at a local hospital for a gunshot wound to her face and is expected to recover, police said.

Responding detectives quickly realized that the suspect’s description also matched that of a man who’d robbed the 7-Eleven on McHenry Avenue the week before.

On October 14, after identifying him as the primary suspect in the donut shop robbery, detectives located and arrested Smith without incident. The gun he is believed to have used in both robberies was also recovered, and additional evidence located during the investigation connected Smith to yet a third robbery in Livermore on October 9, police said.

Smith was booked at the Stanislaus County jail on several charges, including robbery and attempted murder.
