A transient man wanted for homicide has been arrested after allegedly committing an attempted murder.

On Monday, June 21, 2021, 34-year-old Travis Payment was found deceased in front of his trailer, located in the 16500 block of Stoddard Wells Road in Victorville. Victorville police were notified and located him there at about 1 p.m.

“During the investigation, investigators learned that the victim was seen earlier in the day with a Hispanic male known only as ‘Smokey,’” states the news release. The suspect was identified as a 25-year-old transient man named John Waninger.

Four days later, Waninger was arrested for attempted murder in Auburn, California. The Placer County Sheriff’s Department notified Victorville homicide investigators, who then went to Placer County to interview the suspect. As of June 29th, Waninger is still in custody in Auburn and “will be extradited to San Bernardino County at a later date,” according to the release.
