POLICE INVESTIGATE DUI FATAL COLLISION

HOLLISTER, CALIFORNIA – June 21, 2021– On June 20, 2021, Hollister Police Department has arrested the driver of a vehicle that collided with two pedestrians on Sunnyslope Road.

On June 20, 2021 at about 6:25 pm, Hollister Police and Fire Personnel responded to a report of a vehicle collision that resulted in the vehicle colliding with two pedestrians.  The incident occurred on Sunnyslope Road near Sunnyslope Lane.

As police arrived on scene, Fire and medical personnel were administering lifesaving efforts on one female adult that had been struck by the out of control vehicle.

The investigation revealed the vehicle was westbound on Sunnyslope Road just west of Beverly Drive when it appeared to veer to the right off the roadway at which point the driver overcorrected to the left, causing the car to swerve and lose traction into the oncoming lane.  As the car skidded across the street, a man and a woman were out walking with their dog on the south sidewalk of Sunnyslope Road.

Witnesses described the male pushing the female out of the way to avoid her being hit by the rapidly approaching out of control car.  Despite his effort, the vehicle hit them both.  The male pedestrian received moderate injuries but the woman sustained major injuries.

After attempts to save the woman’s life were unsuccessful, she was pronounce deceased at the scene.  The identity of the man and woman are not being released at this time pending notification of next of kin and out of respect for their privacy.

The driver of the vehicle was identified as Manuel Martinez Vazquez (23).  The police investigation revealed several indicators of intoxication and a field sobriety test was administered.  Vazquez was taken to Hazel Hawkins Hospital for medical clearance and a search warrant was obtained for a blood sample.

The investigation revealed prior convictions for DUI and other alcohol related crimes.  Vazquez also had a suspended license for DUI.  He was transported to and booked at the San Benito County Jail for 191.5(a) P.C. Gross Vehicular Manslaughter while intoxicated and 23153(b) CVC DUI with BAC over .08 causing great bodily injury.  Because of the previous conviction, he was also booked for 187 P.C., Murder.  Vazquez in currently in custody at the jail with a bail amount of $1,250,000.
