“On May 31 at about 12:33 p.m., deputies assigned to the Morongo Basin Station were conducting extra patrol enforcement for Off Highway vehicles. Deputies observed a male subject on a street legal motorcycle and attempted a traffic stop for no license plate. The driver of the motorcycle fled the scene and a pursuit ensued.
During the pursuit, the driver fled on foot into the desert. While searching for the suspect, a deputy, assigned to the Morongo Basin Station was shot.
The deputy was airlifted to the hospital and received medical treatment. The suspect continued to flee on foot and was located by responding deputies.
The suspect shot at the responding deputies and the deputies returned fire. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene and a handgun was located nearby.
Detectives with the Specialized Investigations Division are on scene conducting the investigation.
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sergeant Dominic Vaca. Sergeant Vaca served 17 years with the Department and was a sergeant at the Morongo Basin Station.
He will be greatly missed by many.”
