“On 11/9/20 at approximately 12:58 in the morning, the Santa Rosa Police received a call that a man had been shot inside his apartment.

The victim told the dispatchers that he lived in the 1400 block of Hendley Street and had been shot by his roommate.  As officers arrived on scene, they encountered a man matching the possible shooters description that was given by the victim.

The suspect was taken into custody without incident.  Officers then approached the front door of the residence and called out to anyone inside.  The victim, a 78-year-old Santa Rosa Resident, approached the officers who noticed he was bleeding from several wounds.

Officers quickly began medical care for the victim’s injuries.  Medical personnel arrived a short time later and the victim was transported to a local hospital.  The victim is still in the hospital in serious but stable condition.

Officers learned that during the evening hours the suspect, identified as Yonas Legesse a 27-year-old Santa Rosa resident, began saying things that made the victim fearful of Legesse.

The victim retreated to his bedroom to sleep.  A short time later Legesse opened the victim’s bedroom door, shined a light on the victim, and shot him several times.  Legesse exited the bedroom and the victim called the police.  After Legesse was taken into custody by officers detectives from the Violent Crimes Team were called in to investigate.  During a search of the residence, a loaded handgun with an extended magazine was located.

Legesse was transported to the Sonoma County Jail where he was booked for 664/187 PC – Attempted Murder.  The victim’s name will not be released at this time due to the violent nature of the crime, and the fact the investigation is still ongoing.

Anyone who witnessed the shooting or may have additional information is encouraged to call the Santa Rosa Police Violent Crimes Team at 707-543-3590 or email at SRPDVCI@srcity.org.  Media inquiries may be directed to Sergeant Kyle Philp at (707) 543-3593 or kphilp@srcity.org”
