SALINAS – On the evening of May 1 a shooting occurred in which two people were injured.

Officers came to the scene at a homeless camp near 800 East Laurel Drive.

A 28-year-old man was “deceased at the scene,” and a 53-year-old man was injured, taken to the hospital and “is expected to survive.”

end of the line for Macias

The next morning officers again came to the camp on the report of another person with a gunshot wound. Apparently this victim hid from officers the previous night, but needed medical attention for his leg wound.

Five days later, on May 7, “Salinas Police Detectives, SWAT, VSTF, and U.S. Marshals collaborated on a surveillance and tactical operation to locate and arrest 18-year-old John Barriga Macias.”

As a result, Macias was arrested for murder at 1:45 p.m.  A subsequent search warrant was served on his apartment in the 2400 block of N. Main Street.

Macias was charged with murder, attempted murder and gang charges.
