Mathew Behnamnia

“On the afternoon of New Year’s Day, Fairfield Police Detectives Nate Strickland and Nick Amavisca were conducting enforcement activities in the area of E. Tabor Avenue and Clay bank Road in Fairfield. The Detectives noticed a black BMW driven by Mathew Behnamnia, a 21-year-old Fairfield resident. The detectives knew Behnamnia from prior firearm and narcotic related arrests in Fairfield. The two detectives were able to verify Behnamnia was on active probation with search terms based on a prior firearm related conviction. The detectives attempted to conduct an enforcement stop on Behnamnia for the purpose of a probation compliance check, but Behnamnia failed to yield and a pursuit began. Behnamnia eventually stopped in the 200 block of Bridgewater Drive in Suisun City where he was taken into custody.

Luckily, for the community, and us a citizen in the area contacted the police to report that a firearm was on the ground a short distance from where Behnamnia was arrested. Fairfield Officers responded to the location and located a loaded 45-caliber Glock handgun. Through the investigation it was determined Behnamnia had discarded the handgun during the pursuit. Behnamnia was transported and booked into Solano County Jail on weapons charges, evading police and a probation violation.

Both detectives involved in this incident are currently assigned to the department’s Special Operations Team (SOT). One of the many responsibilities of a SOT detective is to conduct proactive, targeted enforcement in areas where citizens have called in and expressed concern. This incident clearly illustrates the value of active partnership between the community and police. Proactive enforcement activities coupled with the assistance of citizens willing to get involved help deter and apprehend criminals who continue to roam the streets with guns. The combined effort in this case lead to the recovery of a loaded handgun illegally possessed by a convicted felon, and said felon behind bars. We will chalk that up to a win for Fairfield.”
