18-year-old surrenders to police after fatal shooting of his younger sister

18-year-old Eddie Alvirez turned himself in to police the day after he shot and killed his 13-year-old sister in Lancaster, California.

The incident occurred at about 5:45 PM on August 13, 2019. Marlena Alvirez suffered gunshot wounds at the hands of her older brother while in the bedroom of their home in the 1700 block of West Avenue J-15. Eddie fled the scene shortly afterwards.

Family members believe that the shooting was an accident and that Eddie panicked after the gun went off, and ran away from home as a result.

Marlena’s uncle took her to the hospital where she unfortunately succumbed to her wounds.

A detailed description of Eddie Alvirez was released, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

At approximately 2:00 PM on Wednesday, August 14, 2019, Alvirez turned himself in at Lancaster Police Station. He has since been charged with fatally shooting his sister and faces one count of involuntary manslaughter and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. If convicted, he may be sentenced to 14 years in prison.
