SONORA — A local man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted homicide after allegedly trying to kill his own mother.

Tuolumne County deputies responded to a home on Fallview Drive early on Saturday morning in response to a woman claiming her son, 23-year-old Matthew Rose, was trying to kill her.

Deputies found her hiding in a bathroom.

Rose, whose motives remain unknown, allegedly attacked her, strangled her, then brandished a large kitchen knife and threatened to kill her and himself.

The woman managed to evade him and hide in the bathroom, at which point she called for help.

Deputies found Rose outside the home with a self-inflicted stab wound to his abdomen and took him to a local hospital to be medically cleared.

He faces charges of criminal threats and attempted homicide.
