Santa Barbara County – 32-year-old Templeton resident Kyle Kenneth Hogue must have been hungrier than usual on the night of May 24th. It was just after 10 p.m. when he went to an Orcutt Road Jack in the Box in the search of some fast-food nutrition and was observed by a Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s deputy on routine patrol.

According to SBSD Public Information Officer Kelly Hoover, Hogue “appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance” when the deputy spotted him. Contact with Hogue immediately ensued, whereupon he was detained and handcuffed.

As is routine, the deputy then searched Hogue’s person and the backpack he was carrying. In his jacket pocket, the deputy discovered “a glass smoking methamphetamine pipe.”

Moving on to search Hogue’s backpack, the deputy then found “a loaded 9mm Rock Island Armory pistol, a loaded sawed-off Springfield Model 67 12-gauge shotgun, and a PR-24 baton.” Neither of the firearms carried a serial number. At the bottom of the backpack, the deputy discovered “100 rounds of 9mm ammunition and six shotgun rounds.

At that point, Hogue was placed under arrest and transported to Santa Barbara County Jail, where he was booked on charges of being under the influence of a controlled substance, carrying a concealed firearm, manufacturing a short barrel gun, manufacturing a lead cane, and possession of unlawful narcotic paraphernalia. He remains in custody with his bail set at $35,000.
