Man on probation arrested for felony theft

UKIAH – Right in the middle of the day around 1:00 pm on March 21st a man stole alcohol from a grocery store in the 1300 block of North State Street.

Detectives were not able to locate the suspect after the incident, but they did have his picture captured on surveillance video. The suspect was wearing “specific clothing items.”

Less than two hours later a deputy made a traffic stop. The deputy assisted in the initial investigation of the previous theft, including viewing the surveillance video. He also noticed that the driver that he had just pulled over wore the same specific clothes that the thief was wearing on the video.

43-year-old Zebulon Couthren was on probation and also had a misdemeanor warrant out for his arrest. In his car he had methamphetamine and the bottle of alcohol that he had stolen.

Couthren was charged with petty theft, probation violation, driving on a suspended license and possession of a controlled substance
