POMONA — Directed gang enforcement led the Pomona Police Major Crimes Task Force to chase a speeding 2014 black Honda Accord eastbound on San Bernardino Avenue towards Mills Avenue on the evening of November 22nd.

The vehicle’s high rate of speed led officers into the city of Montclair, where they conducted a traffic stop and gained access. The driver, David Angel Arellano (19) of Pomona admitted to being a Pomona gang member. Two loaded firearms were recovered, while Arellano confessed to possessing them.

The confession coupled with the admittance led Major Crimes Task Force officers to believe that Arellano could be concealing additional weapons, and obtained an immediate search warrant for the suspect’s residence located in the 800 block of Boston Place, Pomona.

During service of the search warrant, three additional firearms were located, including an illegal assault rifle. Additional illegal items included a high-capacity magazine, several live ammunition rounds, brass knuckles, and gang paraphernalia.

Due to the traffic stop and search warrant, Arellano was booked at Pomona city jail on suspicion of gang member in possession of a loaded firearm, possession of an unregistered firearm, gang member in possession of ammunition, possession of an assault rifle and an outstanding arrest warrant.

A family member of Arellano, George Gustavo Cortes (39) of Pomona, was contacted at the residence during the service of the warrant and placed under arrest for an unrelated outstanding arrest warrant.

Major Crimes Task Force Corporal J. Martinez announced that the unit takes a proactive approach to gang violence through directed enforcement and are committed to the safety of the citizens of Pomona.
