Shooter Flees to Mexico, is Arrested

Ray Koloseta Pitoau

SAN DIEGO — Last month, a man shot an off-duty sheriff’s deputy and a bystander near Petco Park and then fled the scene and, as was later discovered, the country.

37-year-old Ray Koloseta Pitoau was arrested in Tijuana last week and returned to San Diego County Jail.

The US Marshal’s Service worked with Mexican authorities in the arrest.

Early on the morning of August 7th, Pitoau confronted a group of people in the 500 block of Island Avenue and showed that he had a handgun.

Three people in the group were off-duty policemen and one of them tried to take away the weapon and was shot three times in his shoulder.  The wounds were not life-threatening.

Pitoau is charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon.
