Sheriff’s Deputies Arrest Driver for Assault with a Deadly Weapon

Suspect taken to hospital before jail (CBS5)

MARTINEZ – A man arrested twice in as many months faces more serious charges from his encounter with law enforcement last weekend, and this time he’s being held in custody with bail denied.

Contra Costa County Sheriff’s deputies arrested 34-year-old Joey Carroll on Saturday night, a transient from Pittsburg, for allegedly stealing a car, ramming it into a patrol car, and then driving it the wrong way on a freeway.

Carroll was previously arrested July 15 in Concord on suspicion of vehicle theft, possession of burglary tools, and he was on supervised probation.

His latest troubles began August 19th when deputies saw a man enter a stolen vehicle, parked near Actriz Avenue and Arthur Road in an unincorporated section of Martinez, and saw him start driving away.

Deputies attempted to stop the stolen car, which pulled into a gas station on Arthur Road. As deputies approached on foot, the suspect rammed the stolen car into the patrol car, drawing gunfire from one deputy, before the suspect sped away on to Freeway 680—against traffic and then crashed into another vehicle.

Carroll and the other driver sustained minor injuries from the accident, police said. Both received medical treatment at a hospital, and when Carroll was discharged he was transported to the Martinez Detention Facility.

Carroll is charged with assault with a deadly weapon, evading a police officer causing serious bodily injury or death, possession of stolen property, vehicle theft, evading a police officer by driving the wrong way, obstructing or resisting a police officer, and probation violation.
