SALINAS — On August 13th just after 1 AM, officers arrived on the 100 block of Rider Avenue after the city’s ShotSpotter system detected multiple gunshots in the area.

Officers found evidence of a shooting but no victims, nor did anyone call to report the shots.

Meanwhile, a Salinas PD officer at Natividad Medical Center on an unrelated matter was informed of two gunshot victims who’d just arrived at the emergency room.

The victims — identified only as two men, one 20 and the other 22 — had arrived suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

The younger victim told police he’d dropped off his cousin in the parking lot of the apartment complex in the area when an unknown assailant walked up and started shooting. The victim immediately hit the gas and immediately drove to the medical center after realizing they’d both been hit.

The younger victim’s condition is listed as critical, while the older is in “critical condition with serious, life-threatening wounds.”

Police are investigating the shooting as gang-related. Anyone who may have relevant information is strongly encouraged to contact Salinas PD at (831) 758 – 7226.
