SALINAS — Just before midnight on July 23rd, police arrived on the 300 block of Paloma Avenue after a reported shooting.

While en route, they’d been informed of a victim of a gunshot wound at the scene.

Indeed, upon arrival, they discovered 20-year-old Diego Espinoza suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

Officers were able to provide CPR until medical personnel could make it to the scene. Unfortunately, Espinoza passed away shortly thereafter.

Preliminary investigation suggested that Espinoza, local to Salinas, had just arrived home when he’d been approached by two unknown men. For some reason, the two opened fire and Espinoza was hit several times.

The two suspects were reportedly last seen running along Margot Street. Beyond that, investigators have no solid descriptions at this time.

Salinas PD notes in a press release that the murder is being investigated as gang-related. Anyone with information that may assist the investigation is encouraged to contact Detective Ken Hendrickson at (831) 758-7129 or Detective Justin Heckman at (831) 758-7322.
