Elderly man arrested for attempted murder during domestic dispute

Richard Lane

CUPERTINO — The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Department  reported a domestic disturbance on Saturday morning in which gunshots were fired.

Responding West Valley Patrol deputies came upon a gunshot victim located in the front living area of a home on Martinwood Way in Cupertino. According to Sergeant Rich Glennon, “Multiple neighbors reported hearing the sound of a gunshot and also heard a man yelling he had been shot.”

Deputies met with a 48-year-old male victim who was suffering from a gunshot wound sustained while defending himself against 79-year-old Richard Lane of Sunnyvale. Lane fired at the victim during a confrontation at the victim’s home.

A witness to the shooting was able to notify police concerning the area in which Lane lived and was able to describe to police the vehicle he was driving. Officers located the suspect driving through the area.

Glennon added, “The quick apprehension of this suspect would not have been possible without the assistance of the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety and witnesses who quickly provided information to investigators.”

Lane was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on the charge of attempted murder.
