Gunfire Punctuates Roommate Dispute in Heart of Hollywood

Scene at shooting

Officer-involved shooting leaves one dead

HOLLYWOOD — “Shots Fired, Police Detail” was called near midnight on June 22, 2017, as a roommate argument turned ugly in Hollywood.

LAPD received an assist call from a man who wanted to remove his belongings from his apartment in the Hillside/La Brea neighborhood near Runyon Canyon Road. The tone of an argument had alarmed the roommate, spurring him to seek police help. When he opened the front door, a suspect in his 20’s shot his weapon.

Multiple officers arrived on the scene, streets were closed off, and a police helicopter lit up the 4th-floor balcony where the suspect was seen next.

Officers saw an object in the suspect’s hand, made communication, then fired. Neighbors screamed during the rounds of gunfire. The suspect was shot. Officers found the suspect dead at the scene.

A YouTube video by Allen Benatar shows the lit-up apartment, the officers announcements to the suspect on the balcony, then the sounds of gunfire beginning at 2:46 minutes (warning – graphic language).

No officers or neighbors were injured. Police escorted the terrified tenants back to their apartments. Streets remain closed. Ongoing police activity will continue, with two shooting scenes and forensic evidence to analyze during the investigation.
