DNA Connects Man to Attempted Robbery 15 Months Ago

Benjamin Genova

GROVER BEACH — A robbery occurred over a year ago on January 9, 2016, at Laurel Lane Liquor on 1291 Laurel Lane.

Officers arrived and did not find the suspect.  However, they did find a face mask and toy gun that the suspect dropped as he fled the store.

In April of last year, investigators began working with the DNA evidence left behind.  A DNA profile was swabbed from the face mask.

Then, in February of this year, the Department of Justice lab matched the DNA found on the mask with that of 34-year-old Benjamin Genova of Grover Beach.

Finally, on April 26, police arrested Genova at his house and charged him with burglary and attempted robbery. His bail was set at $25,000.

SLOPD says, “This arrest should serve as a reminder that the Police Department continues to work cases even when an extended period of time has passed.”
