Mother and Boyfriend Arrested in Connection with Toddler’s Death

SACRAMENTO — The mother of a toddler and her boyfriend booked into jail on Wednesday, November 23, 2016 for the death of her two-year-old child were scheduled to appear in court today.
Rebecca Thomas, 34, and her boyfriend, Taylor Montgomery-Gutzman, 23, face felony charges of murder, child endangerment and assault with a child under the age of 8.
On October 13, 2016, police responded to calls of a child not breathing at a residence on the 8000 block of Auburn Blvd. Officers administered first aid to a toddler until paramedics arrived to take the child to the hospital. The toddler was later pronounced dead. Police said the victim was a twin and that both children had existing medical conditions.
Sacramento County Superior Court records do not show any prior incidents for Montgomery-Gutzman, other than his arrest in connection with the toddler’s death. However, Thomas has had numerous run-ins with law enforcement.
She was first arrested in early 2010 on a petty theft charge that was later dismissed. A charge a year later in June 2011 was also dismissed after she was arrested and charged with possessing controlled substances and drug paraphernalia.
Court records also show that in 2012, Thomas pleaded no contest to a petty theft charge, and again in 2013 when she was arrested for driving under the influence.
Last year she pleaded no contest for reckless driving where a count of being under the influence of a controlled substance was dismissed.
