Serial Arson Suspect Nabbed in Fremont

Cory Jaysingh Minhas

FREMONT – Police announced on Tuesday the arrest of a suspected arsonist who may be responsible for setting 16 fires in the Warm Springs neighborhood of Fremont.

Cory Jaysingh Minhas, 30, a local resident, was arrested October 14th near the scene of the latest in a series of small fires that began occurring in July. Minhas was booked at Fremont Jail on two counts of arson.

He became a primary suspect following an October 13 fire in a greenbelt south of Mayten Way and Warm Springs Boulevard, not long after police and fire department investigators responded to a 911 call at 1 p.m.

Minhas was taken into custody following an investigation at the scene of the most recent fire, with the assistance of a police dog and video surveillance evidence obtained from nearby.

Police said they believe Minhas is solely responsible for setting all 16 fires occurring between Hackamore Lane and Mayten Way, although their investigation is still continuing.

Most of the fires were limited to garbage, small bushes, dumpsters, and trees. Almost all of them were set on weekends and mostly between midnight and 5 A.M.
