On the morning of Wednesday, October 28th, Nathan Michael Vargas, a 31-year-old Fairfield resident, was arrested on suspicion of DUI after his car collided with and killed a pedestrian, according to Fairfield Police.

The incident happened at 5:20 am yesterday on East Travis Boulevard near San Bruno Street in Fairfield. The Fairfield Police believe that Vargas was under the influence of a controlled substance while he was driving his vehicle eastbound in the westbound lanes, and partially on the sidewalk along East Travis.

The victim was crossing the street in the crosswalk when Vargas hit him, and then crashed into a PG&E power pole. The victim, who is only being identified as a 44-year-old Fairfield man, was pronounced dead at the scene.

East Travis Boulevard was closed most of the day yesterday as Fairfield Police conducted their investigation and the power pole was repaired.

Records show that Vargas had been arrested earlier this year, on March 6, for disorderly conduct – public intoxication. He was arrested by Fairfield Police at a home in north Fairfield on Glenwood Drive, near Rolling Hills Elementary School.

Older records show an arrest in November of 2006 for driving under the influence, and in June of 2009 for public intoxication, resisting arrest, and violating probation.

Vargas was booked on Wednesday for gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated, and driving under the influence of drugs causing bodily injury.
