According to the report, the West Covina Police Department has spent several years trying to follow up on the case, and it has been re-opened several times.

Now, over 17 years later, members of the U.S. Marshals Pacific Southwest Regional Fugitive Task Force and Detectives with the West Covina Police Department, in conjunction with Mexican law enforcement, found a connection with a suspect identified as David Armando Caldera, 39,  who is suspected of committing the murder. On Thursday, September 3, they located and arrested Caldera in Tehuacan, Puebla, Mexico.

He was deported from Mexico by their immigration department, and flown to Los Angeles International Airport later that day. He was turned over into local custody without incident, and was booked at the West Covina city jail early Friday morning. He is currently being held without bail.

Caldera was also reported to be a local West Covina gang member, and fled to Mexico after the murder in 1998.
