SWAT Standoff Ends Peaceably with One in Custody

BAKERSFIELD — A 43-year-old Bakersfield resident was arrested on Friday afternoon following a brief standoff with police and the SWAT team. Johnny Stephens was booked into the Kern County Jail for spousal abuse.

According to the Bakersfield Police Department, the incident began at around 3 p.m. on Friday, June 26, when police officers were called out to a residence in the 3600 block of Harmony Street in northeast Bakersfield regarding a domestic violence report.

Officers said that when they arrived, they observed an individual matching the suspect’s description retreating back inside the residence. After repeated attempts by officers to make contact with the suspect by phone and at the front door with no response, the BPD SWAT unit was called out to assist.

A short time later, SWAT officers were able to establish contact with Stephens, eventually taking him into custody without further incident.
