Authorities initially believed Masaharu Ono, 89, discovered his wife’s body inside their mobile home in the Golf Green Estates at 8665 Florin Road. However an investigation by the Sacramento County Sheriff’s homicide team and County coroner determined that injuries the victim, Hiroko Ono, 83, had sustained were the cause of her death.

Her husband has been accused of the murder and is currently being held without the possibility of bail at the Sacramento County Main Jail. Detectives report that there are no other outstanding persons of interest in this case.

Ono faces his first court appearance on Tuesday, June 9.

Although it is rare for a long-time spouse to murder his or her wife or husband in old age, just last month a 100-year-old New Jersey man killed his 88-year-old wife with an ax while she slept. He then went into the bathroom and committed suicide with a knife. According to Bergen County, New Jersey County Prosecutor John L. Molinelli, Michael Juskin and his wife Rosalia had a “’history of domestic issues.” Juskin is one of the oldest people ever to be accused of homicide. His family said he suffered from dementia.
