EL CENTRO – A routine traffic stop on Pico avenue in El Centro turned into a not-so-routine drug bust, with the assistance of K-9 officer Tico.
Police observed and stopped a car with a vehicle code violation and obtained from its two occupants consent to search the vehicle. Tico alerted his partner to a suspicious spare tire in the trunk. Upon further investigation, they found 18 pounds of meth stashed in the tire as 20 individual packages. Police estimate the value of this haul at $430,000.
Both suspects were arrested. However, one of them was released after authorities concluded he had no knowledge of the hidden drugs. 32-year-old Gilbert Ochoa was booked for felony possession and transportation of methamphetamine for sale.
