Man Confesses to Shooting Live-in Girlfriend

SAN BERNARDINO – Police arrested a man who told police he shot his live-in girlfriend on Friday night, but a motive has yet to be determined.

Peter Joseph Cerda, 30, of San Bernardino was taken into custody after police arrived at a two-story apartment complex and finding Cathy Ann Silvey, 29, dead. He admitted to the shooting, said police.
“The victim,” Sgt. Gary Robertson said on Monday, “was deceased at the scene with a shotgun wound to the head.”

Police received a call at 10:05 p.m. of shots fired at an apartment complex at 995 West 2nd St. The call warned police that a man with a shotgun had apparently shot a person inside the first floor apartment.
Police arrived and discovered Cerda unarmed. Robertson, who said Cerda was restrained by a taser, was taken into custody, “and the weapon used in the shooting was recovered.”

Robertson said, “the suspect made statements indicating that he had shot and killed the victim.” He also said, “the motive for the shooting has not been determined.”

Cerda, who had been disarmed by either his own parents or that of Silvey’s parents, was taken to West Valley Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga where he is being held without bail. Robertson said Cerda called his parents after the shooting had taken place.

The case will be presented to the District Attorney’s office this week for review and likely criminal charges being filed, said Robertson. Cerda will likely be arraigned on Tuesday in San Bernardino County Superior Court.
