Taft Man Arrested for Attempted Burglary

TAFT — A man suspected of trying to break into a home in the southwest Kern County town of Taft was arrested last Thursday night after trying to run from police.

Zackary Owens, 18, of Taft was booked into the Taft City Jail for one count of attempted first degree burglary, resisting arrest and unlawful possession of a hypodermic syringe.

According to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a call of trespassing at a residence in the 400 block of “B” Street in south Taft at around 11:30 p.m. on May 22.

When deputies approached the backyard area of the residence they said they could hear movement coming from the yard.

Deputies also said they then saw a male subject matching the description provided by the reporting party, later identified as Owens, exit the yard and flee on foot down an alley.

After a short chase Owens was caught and detained.

During their investigation and search of a backpack that Owens was carrying, deputies said they discovered evidence that revealed he was attempting to gain entry to and burglarize the residence, as well as hypodermic syringe.
