Hitchhiking Burglars Catch Ride to Jail

Ventura County – A 911 Emergency call reporting a residential burglary in process at a home in Camarillo on the morning of February 27th brought an immediate multi-jurisdictional law enforcement response to the scene of the alleged crime.  With Ventura County Sheriff’s Department Deputies working out of both Camarillo Police and Moorpark Police headquarters arriving at the home, two male suspects were observed fleeing from the area in a silver sedan.

According to Ventura County Sheriff’s Department spokesman Sgt. Eric Buschow, pursuit of the suspect vehicle immediately ensued, with the sedan leading the chase at high speed down multi-lane Santa Rosa Road.  But, as these things usually go where the prey is not a licensed competitive NASCAR driver, Deputies pursued the getaway car “until it collided with a light pole.”

As the single most dominant characteristic of people leading the cops on a high-speed chase is sheer determination, and as that determination is often accompanied by unreasonable expectations, the two men in the disabled sedan promptly alighted from the vehicle and took off on foot, running through the otherwise quiet community of Leisure Village.  As the suspects managed to hide themselves in the uninhabited areas of the community, they managed, Buschow said, to “evade deputies for several hours.”  While the search for the two men went on with the help of patrol units, an aviation unit, and multiple K-9 details, investigators examined their vehicle and found assorted stolen property within.

The search continued to no avail, but some twelve hours later, as midnight approached, an off-duty VCS deputy was driving down Santa Rosa Road when he observed a pair of men hitchhiking at the side of the road.  Not long afterward, units from the search still in progress rolled up the road and “converged on the pair”.  Once identified as the suspects of the search, Richard Clifton McKay, 22, and George Ray Thomas, 19, were taken into custody.  Both men were transported to Ventura County Jail where they were booked on charges of First Degree Residential Burglary and Resisting or Delaying a Peace Officer, with bail set at $50,000 each.
