Suspect Arrested in Visalia Attempted Murder

VISALIA – Police arrested a man they believe to be responsible for attempting to shoot another man last week in Visalia.

The incident happened last Tuesday around 1:30 a.m. Police received a call that shots had been fired in the area of County Center Drive and Campus Avenue.

Investigators determined that there had been a gang-motivated altercation between two men. Police believe that 26-year-old Anthony Cortez pulled out a gun and fired at the other man, whose identity has not been revealed.

Officers with the Visalia Police Department found Cortez on Friday in the 1000 block of West Houston Avenue and arrested him without incident. He is being charged with attempted murder with an added gang enhancement that could increase his sentence.

Police subsequently served two search warrants, during which they arrested 54-year-old Maria Dalia Martinez on suspicion of narcotics sales. The charge is not related to the shooting.
