Second Vacaville PD Officer-Involved Shooting in Three Weeks; Suspect Killed
VACAVILLE – The quiet streets of suburban Vacaville erupted in gunfire Thursday night. Suspect Kendall Walker, 24, a Fairfield resident, died of gunshot wounds. Walker had armed himself with a knife, hammer and crowbar before confronting police.
Earlier Thursday, Vacaville police had received reports about a man acting strangely at two different Vacaville residences. The complainants provided accurate descriptions of the man and the car he was driving, a burgundy Geo Metro.
That afternoon, officers spotted the car parked in a residential neighborhood. Walker got in the car and drove off at high speed. “That led to an attempt to make a traffic stop [for the driving violations],” said Lt. John Carli. Walker refused to yield and police in several cars initiated pursuit at about 7:30 p.m.. Thursday.
Things rapidly escalated from there. Officers laid spike strips across Ulatis Drive at Christine Drive. Walker steered around them and “aimed his car” at an officer who jumped out of the way, narrowly escaping injury or death.
The pursuit continued as officers attempted to stop Walker’s car with their vehicles by using “pursuit intervention techniques.” They succeeded with the second PIT attempt.
At that point Walker emerged from the Geo Metro armed with his non-firearm weapons and charged “with extreme aggression,” official sources said. Officers in fear for their lives or grave injury shot Walker four times, he died of his wounds minutes later. Officials said an autopsy could reveal if drugs played a role in his death.
On June 28, Vacaville police shot and killed Lonnie Taylor, 21, of Sacramento. Taylor had allegedly attempted to run officers down after a traffic stop on I-80.
