Stabbing Suspect Surrenders to Police

BAKERSFIELD — A woman alleged to have stabbed another during a fight last Thursday turned herself in to Bakersfield Police on Monday.

Kyla Labat

27-year-old Kyla Labat surrendered at the Police Department Headquarters at 1601 Truxtun Avenue on July 1, claiming self-defense after she stabbed a juvenile female multiple times. The girl was taken to a local hospital and treated for minor injuries.

Labat said she waited until Monday to turn herself in because she needed someone to look after her two children. She is now sitting in a Kern County Jail on $25,000 bail, facing a charge of assault with a deadly weapon.

The initial incident occurred on June 27, 2013, at approximately 10:15 p.m., when Labat and her younger cousin found themselves in an altercation with a group of teenagers and young women. Labat claims five young women jumped her, punching and hitting her with metal poles.

Bakersfield Police Officers were then dispatched to the intersection of Clifton Street and Texas Street regarding a stabbing. Upon arrival, they discovered an underage female suffering from stab wounds.

Witnesses at the scene identified Labat as the suspect.
