Man Slashes Wife with Samurai Sword

San Luis Obispo arrested a man for slashing his wife with a samurai sword.

According to a press release from the sheriff’s office, they received a call about a domestic violence incident in Los Osos.

The victim told deputies the injuries were caused by her husband.

She drove herself to a local hospital with injuries to her hands, fingers and stomach that were caused by a samurai sword.

Investigators say they believe the suspect threatened the victim with a handgun.

Because the suspect was believed to be armed and dangerous, approximately 20 sheriff’s deputies went to the residence located in the 600 block of Los Osos Valley Road to apprehend the suspect.

Deputies surrounded the house and, at approximately 2:45 p.m., the suspect came out of the house and was taken into custody without incident.

As a safety precaution, nearby Monarch Grove Elementary School was placed on lockdown and portions of Los Osos Valley Road were also blocked off to traffic. The lockdown at the school ended at approximately 3:30 p.m.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital with injuries to his leg that investigators believe are the result of the victim defending herself.

The suspect has been identified as Charles Haig Guenther, 36, of Los Osos.

Guenther is charged with attempted murder, felony domestic violence, false imprisonment and making felony threats.
