Police Nab 27, Impound 17 Cars in Early Morning Street Race

6th Street’s long straight path made it a popular drag racing destination

RANCHO CUCAMONGA – Twenty seven people were arrested and police impounded 17 vehicles from an early Monday morning street racing raid.

On Tuesday, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies identified those arrested in the illegal street racing that took place on Sixth Street. Police reported spotting two drivers racing in an industrial area west of Etiwanda Ave., the southeast portion of the city near neighboring Fontana. Deputies eventually spotted two more races taking place while awaiting backup units.

“We haven’t seen it up here in awhile,” said county sheriff’s Sgt. Ken Jamieson.

Not everyone arrested participated in the actual racing, said reports. Some were watching the races. Once police arrived, most of the participants fled but drove into a dead end on Sixth St. According to a release, it is a misdemeanor to observe a street race.

Throughout the years, said police, there have been street racing incidents that have led to crashes and deaths. It led to special task forces being organized from several police agencies and grants sought to help eliminate street racing. In Monday’s raid, police towed vehicles that had been described containing illegal engines or transmission modifications.

Most spectators fled down 6th Street when police arrived, not realizing it is a dead end.
