Shooting in Greenfield Leaves One Dead

The Greenfield Police Department in South Monterey County has identified the man who was fatally shot Monday night.

5th Street & Maple Avenue

According to a statement released this afternoon interim Police Chief Eric Sills said  Thomas Garnica Morales, 34, was shot dead during a drive-by shooting in the area of Maple Avenue and 5th Street.

In the press release, Sills said a second man in his mid 30s also wounded in the gunfire was transported to a Bay Area hospital. He is expected to recover from his wounds, said Sills.

According to Greenfield police, witnesses in the neighborhood said they heard shouting followed by the popping of gunshots in the area where the two victims were standing. A lowered dark colored pick-up truck was seen driving away from the scene and according to police, at least two people who were wearing dark, hooded sweatshirts were seen in the vehicle by witnesses.

According to Sills, Morales and the other wounded man were known to associate with a local criminal street gang but it is unclear why the two men were targeted. Anyone with information is asked to contact Greenfield police detective Rey Medeles at 831-760-6277 or the WeTip anonymous hotline at 1-800-782-7463.
