Mother Arrested on Pot Possession While Visiting Son at Juvenile Camp

SAN DIMAS – Los Angeles County Sheriff’s arrested a Pomona mother on possession of marijuana while she was trying to visit her son at a county youth probation camp last week. On Wednesday, Rhonda Gonzalez, 44, is expected to appear at Pomona Municipal Court for possession of illegal narcotics and also in possession of a phony medical marijuana card, according to the charges.

Rhonda Gonzalez arrested for bringing marijuana into her son's probation camp

Gonzalez had shown up at Camp Glenn Rockey in San Dimas. Deputies had searched her purse and found bundles of marijuana. She was visiting her son on Jan. 12. “Conducting searches is nothing unusual,” said Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Sgt. Vicki Gregory. “Sometimes, there’s information about something coming into the facility, or they’re suspecting maybe something is being smuggled into the facility by visitors.” Gonzalez was also discovered to have an outstanding warrant from Bellflower, said authorities.

All visitors are searched by county probation personnel, said Gregory. Over 50 families visit the facility on Sycamore Canyon Rd. during weekends. A news release said that probation officials have been on the lookout due to an influx of illegal drugs, primarily marijuana, coming into the camp. Additional action was taken, namely the stepping up of searching visitors.
Said Gregory: “You come up with a game plan to solve the issue. For this facility, there were concerns about different types of substances coming into the facility, so we increased the searches.”
During visiting hours on Saturday, the San Dimas Sheriff’s Special Assignment Team assisted camp officials with searches, including cars. During one of the searches, Gonzalez’s purse was searched. “It’s an issue with this facility,” said Gregory, “and you react to that and you came up with a game plan to solve the issue. For this facility, there were concerns about different types of substances coming into the facility, so they increased the searches.”
Sheriff’s officials did not say why Gonzalez’s son, who is a juvenile, was in the camp. Gonzalez, held on $35,000 bail, was booked at the Century Regional Detention Center.
