Sketch released in Sacramento shooting death

SACRAMENTO — Sheriff’s officials have released a sketch of the man they believe responsible for the Aug. 8 shooting death of a married father of two outside his apartment complex.

Michael Branner, 30, was standing in front of his Arden Arcade residence with a male roommate they both were approached by an unknown assailant at about 12:30 a.m. that morning. According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department, the suspect pointed a handgun at Branner and demanded money. Before Branner or his roommate could answer, the suspect fired a shot into Branner’s neck.

Deputies responded to the shooting and found Branner lying on the sidewalk. A short time later, paramedics pronounced Branner dead.

Investigators believe the suspect fled the scene in a late-model, light-colored Chevrolet HHR-type vehicle. He is described as a dark-skinned black male, approximately 19 years old, about 5’11” in height, weighing 210 pounds, with short braids or dreadlocks.

Anyone with information about the shooting is urged to call sheriff’s homicide detectives at (916) 874-5115 or Crime Alert at (916) 443-4357. A text message tip may be sent by texting to 274637 (CRIMES), then entering SACTIP followed by the tip information. Callers may remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.
