Good Samaritans Tackle Purse Snatcher in Hayward

HAYWARD, CA – Stun-gun-wielding would-be thief Danica Michaele Collins, 25, found herself restrained on Monday when witnesses to her attempted purse snatching outside a Pet Club store at Hesperian Boulevard and Tennyson Road subdued her and wrestled away the weapon, police said.

Purse theft

Witnesses reported hearing screams at 1:13 p.m. in the Pet Club parking lot and seeing Hayward resident Collins, whose address is listed as 27267 Sleepy Hollow Ave., forcing a 58-year-old woman to the ground in an attempt to steal her purse. Ravitej Khangura, owner of nearby Karavan Liquors, chased after Collins with an employee and customer Erwin Bock, a 76 year old who happened to be in the store buying a Lotto ticket.

Bock managed to get hold of Collins briefly, but the suspect escaped his grasp and knocked him to the ground. Customers leaving Pet Club then joined Khangura in restraining Collins and wrestling the stun gun from her grasp.

Hayward police arrested Collins at 1:45 p.m. Monday on charges of robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. The suspect confessed to the attempted robbery, saying she needed money to feed her children, police said.
