The father of a 13-day-old infant boy has been arrested on charges of child abuse after the baby’s mother found their son in critical condition.

The baby was brought to the emergency room of Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) on August 19, 2019, with multiple injuries caused by child abuse.

According to the Santa Ana Police Department press release, “The victim suffered a skull fracture, multiple visible injuries to his face and body, as well as internal injuries. The victim also tested positive for methamphetamine and was in critical condition.”

The baby’s mother discovered her son in this condition after she had woken up that day.

Police investigation identified the boy’s biological father, Jonathan Reyes, as the suspect. Reyes was out on bail after committing a robbery back in March of this year.

Reyes told police that he was not responsible for his son’s injuries, though he “made incriminating statements,” the release stated. Reyes did admit to caring for his son while the mother was sleeping as well as to using using methamphetamine.

Santa Ana police arrested Reyes, and he is being held at Orange County Jail, “booked on child abuse charges and charged with committing a crime while out on bail.”

Anyone with information about this case is asked to contact Detective Giovanni Tapia at 714-245-8516, gtapia@santa-ana.org or Orange County Crime Stoppers at 1-855-TIP-OCCS.
