Officer-Involved Shooting Follows Auto Theft

Ryan Rodriguez

RIVERSIDE — Late Christmas night just after midnight, two RPD officers attempted to stop a reported stolen vehicle. A chase ensued.

At the intersection of Main and Spruce Streets, the fleeing vehicle crashed.  However, the driver accelerated in reverse towards the pursuing officers, who fired their weapons in response.

The driver continued his escapade but again lost control near Northbend and Spruce Street and then fled on foot.

Officers put an end to all of this excitement when they discovered 24-year-old Ryan Rodriguez hiding inside a car in the backyard of a nearby residence.

Rodriguez had sustained a minor gunshot wound during the pursuit, which did not prevent him from being charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer.
