After 19 Hour Manhunt, Attempted Murder Suspect Nabbed in Woodland

YOLO – The victims of a life-threatening knife attack in Woodland on June 10 are recovering and were released from UC Davis Medical Center late last week. After Salvador Fierro, Jr. slashed Lydia and Gary Perez, his mother and stepfather, in front of their home at 1443 Edwards Circle around 9 p.m., he vanished for 19 hours.

Woodland police responded to a report that Fierro was fighting with Ms. Perez, whom witnesses described as his mother. While officers were en route to the scene, another witness called to report that Fierro was armed with a knife and fighting his stepfather also, according to a statement issued by a Woodland Police spokesman.

Upon arrival on scene, Woodland police officers administered first aid to both victims. Informed by witnesses that Fierro had fled inside the Perez home, they established a perimeter around it. The WPD SWAT team soon responded also and forced entry into the residence, but Fierro was not found inside.

The neighborhood was ordered on lockdown and police conducted a thorough house-to-house manhunt with the help of a West Sacramento PD K-9 team as well as a Sacramento PD helicopter.

As the manhunt dragged on, other witnesses reported seeing Fierro on foot at various locations in the Edwards Circle neighborhood. More officers arrived on the scene and set up a wider perimeter. Fierro was finally arrested without incident near the scene of the crime the following afternoon.

It was not clear at the time of the arrest whether Fierro was living at the Perez residence. However, Fierro had been tried, convicted and served three years in prison for assaulting the same victims with a knife in 2008. Ms. Perez said at the time she believed her son suffered from mental illness, but she was unable to obtain medical help for him.
