BAKERSFIELD — A Bakersfield SWAT team was called out in attempt to find a murder suspect but when they arrived he was nowhere to be found.

Julio Jesus Romero

The suspect, Julio Jesus Romero of Bakersfield, who was identified by witnesses, is wanted by authorities in connection with a shooting that wounded two and left two others dead outside a party in the 3700 block of Columbus Street at approximately 1:18 a.m. on May 26, 2013.

According to the Bakersfield Police Department, their investigation into the incident revealed Romero as the shooter, and after obtaining a Ramey Warrant for his arrest, officers swarmed a home in the 3900 block of Deacon Avenue at 5 p.m. on May 28, in an attempt to take the 21-year-old fugitive into custody.

However, after a thorough search of the area, a police spokesperson said Romero was not located.

“Officers were led to the home on Deacon Avenue because this is where we were notified Romero lives,” BPD spokesperson Michaela Beard said.

Garcia was transported to Bakersfield Memorial Hospital where he died from his wounds just shortly after the shooting at 1:53 a.m, while Ponce was taken to Kern Medical Center where he was pronounced dead at 3:25 a.m.

Meanwhile, the two additional injured victims are identified as 20-year-old Ramon Garza and 20-year-old Reginald Bailey, both from Bakersfield and are in critical but stable condition at local hospitals.

The investigation is ongoing.
