Winterhaven Traffic Stop Leads to Major Controlled Substances Seizure
WINTERHAVEN, CA — On Thursday, July 30, 2026, Imperial County Sheriff’s deputies assigned to the Winterhaven Sub-Station conducted a traffic enforcement stop on a vehicle carrying a male driver and a female passenger following observed vehicle code violations.
During the initial contact, the driver refused to consent to a voluntary search of the vehicle. Deputies requested mutual aid assistance from U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which deployed a narcotics detection K-9 team to the scene. The K-9 unit performed an exterior sniff of the vehicle and provided an alert indicating the potential presence of controlled substances.
A subsequent physical search of the automobile yielded more than 53 pounds of illicit narcotics, including suspected fentanyl, methamphetamine, and cocaine. Law enforcement officials estimated the overall street value of the confiscated substances at over $700,000.
A background check conducted by deputies revealed that both occupants had prior convictions for drug-related offenses. The driver and passenger were taken into custody and booked into the Imperial County Jail on charges including possession of a controlled substance for sale, transportation of a controlled substance, and possession of a controlled substance with prior drug convictions.
