Suspect Arrested After Disturbance Between Family Members and Standoff in Redwood City

REDWOOD CITY, CA — “On July 18, 2026, Redwood City Police officers responded to the 1000 block of Madison Avenue following a reported disturbance between family members.

Officers contacted a 21-year-old victim who reported that his brother, 37-year-old Redwood City resident Orlando EscobedoAvila, had strangled him and caused him to lose consciousness. The victim displayed injuries consistent with strangulation.

EscobedoAvila barricaded himself inside the residence and refused repeated requests to surrender. Officers authored an arrest warrant and the department activated the Special Response Team (SRT) and Crisis Negotiation Unit (CNU) to develop a plan to apprehend EscobedoAvila.

After several hours of attempted negotiations, EscobedoAvila surrendered and was taken into custody without injury. He was booked into the San Mateo County Maguire Correctional Facility for felony assault and resisting or delaying officers.

EscobedoAvila was also served with a previously unserved restraining order and a new emergency protective order obtained on behalf of the victim.

This remains an active investigation. Anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the Redwood City Police Department at (650) 780-7100.”
