Individual Rescued Following Mental Health Crisis on Highway 113 Overpass

YOLO, CA – On March 29, 2026, Yolo County Sheriff’s Deputies Hunt, Song, and Vega responded to reports of an individual in a mental health crisis on a Highway 113 overpass south of Woodland. Upon arrival, deputies located the individual seated on the safety barrier with their legs hanging over the edge.

According to department reports, the individual did not initially respond to verbal communication and exhibited signs of significant emotional distress. Deputy Vega, a member of the Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT), initiated specialized communication techniques to establish a rapport. The CNT is a unit trained to manage critical incidents, including barricaded subjects and individuals threatening self-harm, with the objective of resolving situations without loss of life.

The negotiation lasted approximately one hour. During the dialogue, California Highway Patrol officers closed the highway below the overpass to ensure the safety of the individual, officers, and motorists. Traffic had previously been traveling at speeds exceeding 65 miles per hour.

Deputy Vega eventually persuaded the individual to move from the ledge to a secure area. Following the resolution of the incident, the individual was transported to a local hospital for medical evaluation and care. Authorities encourage those in similar crises to contact the Yolo County Mental Health Access Line at 888-965-6647 or dial 9-1-1.
