Driver Arrested for DUI and Possession of a Loaded Firearm Following Traffic Stop

GROVER BEACH, CA — Law enforcement officers recently initiated a traffic stop after observing a driver using a mobile device while operating a vehicle. While the stop originated as a citation for a cellular phone violation, the subsequent investigation led to multiple criminal charges.

Upon contacting the driver, officers determined that the individual was operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. During a search of the vehicle, authorities located and seized a loaded firearm and two aerial fireworks. The driver was subsequently placed under arrest and booked on several violations, including driving under the influence (CVC 23152(a)), possession of a loaded firearm in a vehicle (PC 25850(a)), and possession of aerial fireworks (H&S 12677).

In accordance with California state law, handguns transported within a vehicle must be unloaded and secured in a locked container unless the individual possesses a valid concealed carry permit. This incident serves as a public reminder regarding the legal requirements for transporting firearms and the prohibitions against operating a vehicle while impaired or possessing illegal fireworks. Following the arrest, the prohibited items were confiscated as evidence. Authorities emphasized the importance of understanding and adhering to applicable firearm and traffic safety laws to ensure the safety of the public and the driver.
