Moreno Valley Man Arrested in Connection with December 14 Freeway Shooting on SR-91

RIVERSIDE, CA – California Highway Patrol (CHP) investigators arrested a suspect on Monday, December 22, 2025, in connection with a shooting that took place on the SR-91 freeway on December 14, 2025. Maurice Orlando Stells Jr., 41, of Moreno Valley, was taken into custody without incident in Moreno Valley and booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center. He faces several charges, including suspicion of attempted murder, negligent discharge of a firearm, assault with a deadly weapon, and shooting at an occupied vehicle.

The arrest follows an investigation into an incident in the City of Riverside where the driver of a blue Chevrolet Camaro fired several rounds at another motorist. The driver of the victim vehicle was struck by gunfire and required hospitalization. Following the shooting, the driver of the Chevrolet fled the scene heading westbound on SR-91. CHP investigators utilized law enforcement investigative means to identify Stells Jr. as the suspect and driver of the vehicle involved.

Riverside Area Commander Captain E. Meeker stated that the agency investigates crimes occurring on the freeways and utilizes investigators to locate and apprehend suspects. Meeker emphasized that such acts are investigated and prosecuted according to the law.

The investigation remains active. The California Highway Patrol’s Riverside Investigation Unit has requested that any witnesses who observed the incident contact them at (951) 324-7210. The CHP identifies its core mission as providing safety, service, and security.
